who do you wish would just check in?

there's a specific kind of waiting that doesn't look like waiting. you're not by the phone, you're not counting days. but somewhere in you, there's a door you keep leaving unlocked.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write the person's name. that alone can feel like a lot. then describe what checking in would look like from them. a text, a call, a knock. be specific. what would they say that would make the knot in your chest loosen. then write about why you haven't reached out yourself. is it pride, is it fear, is it the feeling that it should come from them. don't judge your answer, just put it on the page. sometimes the longing tells you more about what you value than what you've lost.

  • write about the last message between you and this person, and what it did or didn't say.
  • imagine them texting you right now. write down what you'd want it to say, word for word.
  • consider whether you're waiting for them to prove something, and what that something is.

this is for anyone who's been quietly keeping score of who reaches out first. for the person who says they're fine but checks their phone more than they'd admit.
