who did you become to survive something?

at some point, you changed. not because you wanted to, but because you had to. you became harder, or quieter, or funnier, or smaller. whatever the situation needed you to be.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write about the thing you had to survive. it doesn't need to be dramatic. it just needs to be true. then describe the person you became in response. what traits did you develop, what did you start doing, what did you stop doing. write about those changes without judging them. they kept you safe. now write about which of those changes you're still carrying. some might still serve you. some might be old armour you're wearing in rooms where there's no danger. write about one thing you'd like to put down, and what it would feel like to be without it.

  • describe the person you were before, and what you miss about them.
  • write about a habit or trait you developed to cope that other people now see as just part of who you are.
  • ask yourself whether the danger has passed, and whether you've let yourself notice that.

this is for anyone still living in survival mode long after the thing they survived. for the person who isn't sure which parts of themselves are chosen and which were built out of necessity.
