what feeling do you reach for food instead of?

there's a feeling that arrives and, before you can quite name it, you're already in the kitchen. the food isn't really the point. it's just the nearest door away from something.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

think about the last time you ate not because you were hungry but because something was pressing on you. write about what was happening just before. what were you thinking about. what had just happened, or what were you avoiding thinking about. try to name the feeling underneath, even if the name is vague. boredom, loneliness, anger, something shapeless. write it down. then write about what the food does for you in that moment. does it fill something, quiet something, pause something. this isn't about judgement. it's about noticing the pattern on paper so you can see it more clearly.

  • write about the specific feeling that most often sends you to the cupboard or the fridge.
  • describe the moment just after, when the food is finished and the feeling is still there.
  • write about what you'd need to sit with that feeling for five minutes instead of reaching.

this is for anyone who has noticed the pattern but hasn't looked at what's underneath it yet. you don't need to fix it tonight. just write about it.
