what did you tell yourself you’d deal with later?

later is where you put the things that are too heavy for today. but some of them have been sitting there a long time, gathering weight.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write a list of the things you've deferred. not errands or admin, but the real ones. the conversation, the decision, the feeling you boxed up and shelved. pick the one that's been waiting longest and write about why you put it off the first time. what were you protecting yourself from. then write about what it's costing you to keep it in the later pile. sometimes the thing itself is smaller than the effort of avoiding it. sometimes it isn't, and that's worth knowing too. write down the smallest possible first step, even if you don't take it tonight.

  • write about the exact moment you decided it could wait, and what you told yourself.
  • consider whether later was a plan or a hiding place.
  • think about what your life looks like on the other side of dealing with it.

for anyone whose later pile has become a permanent shelf. for the person who knows exactly what they're avoiding and keeps walking past it.
