what are you protecting by staying busy?

busyness can be a wall. not lazy, not careless. a wall built carefully, brick by task, to keep something from reaching you in the silence.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write down what fills your day. not a schedule, just the motion of it. then try finishing this sentence: "if i stopped, i might have to feel..." and see what comes. you don't need to fix anything. just notice what the busyness sits on top of. it might be grief, or a conversation you don't want to have, or a question you're not ready to answer. write about when you first started filling the silence like this. write about what the still moments feel like when they sneak in anyway.

  • write about the last time you sat with nothing to do and what rose up in you.
  • name the feeling you are most likely to outrun with productivity.
  • describe what rest would actually look like if it didn't make you anxious.

for anyone who has made a life out of doing, and suspects that some of that doing is a way of not feeling.
