what did you learn the hard way that you’d save someone from?

there are things you know now that came at a cost. not wisdom you read somewhere, but something that left a mark on its way in.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

think about a specific lesson, not a general one. something you learned through pain, confusion, or loss. write down what happened, but also write down what you wish someone had said to you before it did. be honest about whether you would have listened. sometimes the hard way is the only way, and that matters too. if you find yourself wanting to protect someone from the same thing, write down what you would say to them. notice the tenderness in that. notice how knowing something the hard way changes the way you hold it.

  • write about the moment you realised you had already learned it, that the lesson was behind you.
  • think about who you would most want to warn, and what that says about how much it cost you.
  • consider whether the hard way gave you something a shortcut never could have.

this one is for anyone who has been through something and come out knowing more than they wanted to. especially if you have never put that knowing into words.
