what's the version of the story you tell yourself before sleep?

in the dark, the story shifts. the version you carry at night is often quieter, less polished, closer to the bone than anything you said out loud.

answer today's question

think about something that has been on your mind lately. a situation, a conversation, a decision. write down the version of it you would tell a friend. then, underneath, write the version that plays when you are lying in the dark and no one is watching. notice the differences. maybe the nighttime version includes details you leave out. maybe it has a different ending, or a different villain. write about why the two versions are different. what does the nighttime version include that the daytime one can't afford to? be honest about which one is closer to true.

  • write about the detail that only appears in the version you think about at night.
  • ask yourself whether the nighttime version is more honest or just more afraid.
  • consider what would happen if you told someone the version you tell yourself in the dark.

this is for anyone who lies awake running through a version of events that doesn't match the one they tell out loud.
