what are you carrying that’s almost light enough to set down?

there is something you are still carrying, but it is lighter than it was. not gone, but loosening. this is about noticing that shift.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write about something you have been holding for a long time. a grief, a resentment, a worry, a role you play. then write about how it has changed. maybe it used to be the first thing you thought about in the morning and now it is the third. maybe it used to make you cry and now it just makes you quiet. describe the weight of it now, honestly. not heavier than it is, not lighter. then write about what almost means to you. what is the difference between almost ready and actually ready. what would need to happen, or not happen, for you to finally put it down. sometimes naming the almost is enough for now.

  • write about how this weight has changed over time, and what that change felt like.
  • think about what you are afraid might happen if you set it down completely.
  • consider whether holding on to it has become more habit than necessity.

this is for anyone in the strange, in between place where something still hurts but not the way it used to. especially if you are closer to letting go than you realise.
