what did you let define you in one sentence?

somewhere along the way, your whole complicated life got compressed into one line. maybe someone else wrote it. maybe you did. either way, it stuck.

every day there's one live question, the same for everyone. answer it anonymously, see what other people said. it's all gone in seven days.

answer today's question

write the sentence. the one that has quietly shaped how you see yourself. it might sound like "i am the one who" or "i was always" or something someone said to you once that fused to your bones. write it plainly. then write about where it came from. who said it first, or when you first started believing it? now ask yourself: is it still true? was it ever fully true? write about the parts of you that the sentence leaves out. the contradictions, the moments that did not fit the narrative. try writing a second sentence, one that holds a different truth. you do not have to replace the first one. just set something else beside it and see how it feels.

  • write about the sentence someone else gave you about yourself, and when you stopped questioning it.
  • describe a moment in your life that directly contradicts the defining line.
  • try writing three different one sentence descriptions of yourself and notice which one feels most honest.

this is for people who have been living inside a summary. who suspect they are more complicated than the story they keep telling.
